Sydney 7s | Highlights
8th February 2017
Over the last weekend, the Sydney leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series took place. With both the women and men’s tournaments happening simultaneously, the Sydney crowd were looking forward to seeing their Australian stars take the field – most notably Elia Green, the superstar speedster who took the game by storm.
It was the Canadian’s women team that powered their way to the title in Sydney after beating the USA in the thrilling final, with the lead exchanging hands several times throughout the game. They had strong results over Russia and tournament hosts Australia earlier in the day. This resulted in Sydney pushing the Canadians up to third in the series’ standings, with a third and fourth place finish for New Zealand and Australia. A disappointing weekend for the home nations as England lost out to Brazil in the Challenge Trophy Final, and Ireland losing out to Russia in the 7th place play-off final.
The men’s tournament was dominated by the form side in the game, South Africa. The Blitzboks have made it four finals in four tournaments this year, and after wrapping up a win in Wellington last week, they have now added Sydney to their list of honours in 2017. The South African win came at the cost of the England team, who after beating Argentina and New Zealand earlier in the day, will be both pleased and disappointed with the final result in Sydney, especially after beating South Africa in the tournament’s pool stages.
We look forward to seeing more HSBC World Sevens Series in Las Vegas where both the Women and Men will be competing in March.
